20 Ways to get the Farmhouse Look

A few years ago, my family bought an old 1920’s farmhouse that was built on 96 acres. It was in rough shape and the layout was impractical. Our goal was to reconfigure the house to make it more functional, while keeping the old farmhouse charm. We’ve salvaged old materials, found new treasures in the barn, and incorporated it all into our new home. I’m going to take you through the farmhouse and share some authentic and fun farmhouse elements.

1. BARN DOORS

Barn doors are a necessary element to have in your farmhouse. While we would have loved to incorporate a sliding barn door or two, the layout of our door frames would not allow it. Nonetheless, these stationary barn doors are a great alternative! Check out my DIY instructions HERE on how you can make these barn doors!

2. CUSTOM RANGE HOOD

Range hoods can be an eye sore in the kitchen. Upgrade your old rusted range hood with a custom wood one that will be a focal point in your kitchen!

3. CHURCH PEW

This is one of my favorite pieces of furniture in the farmhouse. Add some decorative pillows and a cushion to your church pew to give it a comfy and cozy vibe.

4. MASON JAR LIGHT FIXTURE

This is an extremely important element in every dining room. This light fixture creates a mood and sets the perfect tone for the farmhouse. Everyone loves a fun mason jar DIY project. Check out how I made this light fixture HERE!

5. VINTAGE ANIMAL PRINTS

The vintage animal prints are fun, quirky and you can customize the frame to fit any room in the house! We ordered the prints online and then bought the frames separately.

6. 3 PANEL DOORS

We decided to go with white 3 panel doors for all of our interior doors. They are clean, sleek and have a bit more character than ordinary doors.

7. SHIP LAP ACCENT WALLS

Ship lap is a trendy building material that you can use to achieve the farmhouse style in any room. Three bedrooms in our farmhouse have a shiplap accent wall. In the first picture we did a paint and stain mixture to give the wall a little more depth. Another tip when using ship lap is to use a blow torch on the wood to bring out the nots. Check out this video on safely using a blow torch.

8. FUN FARM DÉCOR

Our farmhouse is filled with farm related decor. There have been many thrift store and antique store stops in order to find the perfect decor items to fill up our farmhouse.

9. BARNWOOD VANITY

This tiny powder room was in need of a vanity. We had a bunch of old barnwood laying around so I decided to take that and some old spindles to make a unique vanity. These barnwood elements really give the farmhouse an authentic feel.

10. FARMHOUSE DINING ROOM TABLE

This reclaimed wood table is one of the most important pieces of furniture in our farmhouse. It’s where the family can gather, make memories and eat delicious meals. You want your farmhouse table to look the part but to also be comfortable.

11. FARMHOUSE CANDLES

You can even have your home smelling like a farmhouse! Check out these farmhouse candles, there are so many fun scents to keep your guests guessing. My favorite scents are farmhouse fresh, mutty paws and cabin fever. Check out more candles HERE!

12. OPEN SHELVING WITH POTTERY

We had extra pieces of the butcher block made so that we could put up a few shelves. We use these shelves to display pottery and other nik nak items. You can find these brackets and other fun brackets to hold your shelving on amazon!

13. BLUE PORCH CEILING

There’s an old (southern) wives tail, that if you paint the ceiling blue it will ward off evil spirits. Blue is a calming color and gives the porch a nice relaxing vibe. Some people also swear that blue paint repels insects, but we have found that to be untrue..

14. PAINTED HARDWOOD FLOORS

When we moved into the farmhouse, the hardwood floors were in pretty rough shape. One solution for that problem was to paint the floors! We painted the floors for the two upstairs bedrooms and are super excited about how they turned out.

15. AMERICAN FLAG

If you ask me, every home should be waving an American Flag loud and proud. We have one flag off our front porch, another flag painted on the side of our corn crib, and other flag decor around the farmhouse.

16. DOGGY DECOR

No farmhouse is complete without furry friends running around. Our dogs are a huge part of our lives and we like for them to feel at home too. We have a special hiding place for the dog dishes. You can slide the dishes out when the pups are ready to eat. We also customized wall paper with pictures of our dogs for one of the powder rooms! To find more fun doggy decor go HERE!

17. WOODEN CRATES

Not only are these crates functional for storing items, they are a great decor element to add to your farmhouse! Use them as end tables, storage, foot stools, you name it! We nailed a crate to the wall above our toilet for tp and nik nak storage. Check out some crates HERE!

18. BUTCHER BLOCK COUNTERTOP

Butcher block counters adapt well to any type of kitchen design. These counters are quiet and they hold up very well. If they get damaged in some areas you can always sand it down and re apply a protective coating of mineral oil.

19. FARMHOUSE SINK

Farmhouse sinks are much deeper and wider than traditional kitchen sinks. This sink allows you to rinse and wash your dishes without making a mess. Not only are they functional, these sinks add a beautiful touch to any kitchen. Check out this link to a similar farmhouse sink HERE!

20: BARNWOOD MANTLE

We found an old beam in our barn and decided to use it for the mantle above the fireplace. There are also barnwood planks above the fireplace cut diagonally. This is one of my favorite places to relax and have a glass of wine. I happen to be doing just that while writing this blog post. Cheers 😉
