String Light Concrete Planters

DIY Projects

4 May

For outdoor gatherings it’s important to have enough light. These string lights are the perfect way to create a nice ambience with a soft glow! I love the idea of hanging them by these concrete planters because they’re so easy to make and easy to customize to your own outdoor space.

Step 1: Prep Posts

For this project I used treated 2″ x 2″ x 8′ lumber. Depending on your project you may want to upgrade to larger 4″ x 4″ x 8′ posts and larger pots. I painted my posts with a coat of exterior black paint.

Step 2: Mix Concrete

I used this Sakrete concrete mix and mixed about a 50/50 ratio of concrete mix and water filling up the pot about 3/4 of the way full. I bought small metal planters from Ikea but you can use any size/style/type planter!

Step 3: Set Posts in Place

Set your posts in place and use a level to make sure they’re nice and straight. I used some scrap wood and weights to stabilize the posts. Let the post set according to the concrete mix instructions.

Step 4: Drill Holes for Drainage

Use a drill and small drill bit to drill a few holes in your pot just above the concrete so that water has a place to drain.

Step 5: Soil & Plants

Fill the remainder of your pots with soil and your favorite plants!

Step 5: Secure String Lights

Use these screw hooks to secure your string lights in place. Be sure to use an outdoor extension cord if you need one to reach an outlet. I used a stapler to staple the extension cord down the last post so that it stays hidden.

Walahhhh!! You have some pretty string light planters to add the perfect glow and ambience to any outdoor space.
