This style of house was popular in Southeastern United States during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The main style point was a large breezeway through the center of the house to cool the residents in the hot southern climate. Although this style is popular in the warmer states, we decided to start the Dogtrot trend in Wisconsin! Instead of leaving the breezeway completely open, we used two glass garage doors. That we can leave the garage doors open during the summer months and closed during the winter months. The whole breezeway is heated by in-floor heat and a wall mounted electric fireplace.
My parents built this house on the land right next to the family farmhouse. After all the kids moved out, my parents wanted to downsize and build a house that was energy efficient and zero entry. After doing tons of research and trying out different house designs, we custom designed this Dogtrot house to fit their exact needs.
