We recently converted our garage into a laundry room and powder bathroom. Since most of the budget went towards hiring contractors for plumbing, electrical, and drywall, I’m DIYing the final touches! Over the next few weeks, I’ll be transforming our powder bathroom one project at a time and sharing some budget-friendly design ideas that you can easily implement to refresh your bathroom.

1. Hang Bold Wallpaper
Wallpaper is back, and for good reason! It can make a bold statement in a small space like a bathroom without overwhelming the room. Consider a feature wall behind the vanity and mirror to add a touch of drama. I installed this blue floral peel-and-stick wallpaper on the top of our powder bath’s walls. Peel-and-stick wallpaper is perfect for a DIY weekend project. Below are some other fun wallpaper options along with the essential hanging tools.

2. Install Trim
Adding or updating the trim in your powder bathroom is a great way to introduce architectural interest. Consider installing simple picture molding boxes, adding more character with board-and-batten paneling or even installing wainscoting. A well-placed trim can make the space feel polished and thoughtfully designed.
I installed these picture frame boxes in our nursery and I plan to carry over that design into the powder bathroom! Below is the small detail trim that I used for the picture molding. Check out my tutorial on how to install picture molding here! How to Install Picture Frame Molding

3. Paint Everything (Walls, Cabinets, Ceiling, Floors)
One of the easiest ways to refresh any space is with paint! If your cabinetry is looking a bit tired, painting the vanity can completely change the feel of the room. Don’t forget the ceiling—painting it a slightly lighter color than the walls can create the illusion of height. And for an extra fun update, consider painting the floors with a stenciled pattern for a high-impact, low-budget update.
4. Upgrade Your Mirror
A new mirror can make a huge difference in how your powder bathroom feels. If your current mirror is basic, consider swapping it out for one that makes a statement! If you have a simple frameless mirror, consider DIYing a frame for it. Save a few dollars and buy second-hand off Facebook marketplace or your local thrift stores. For smaller spaces, a well-placed mirror can also help make the room feel larger and more open. Here are a few mirrors I have my eye on from Lowe’s.

5. Update Your Flooring
Flooring can be one of the more expensive updates in any room, but peel-and-stick tiles are an affordable and DIY-friendly option. These peel-and-stick tiles are a great option if you want the look of a checkered marble floor for a fraction of the cost. If you want to add personality to your floor, stencil paint is another great option. With a stencil and a few cans of paint, you can create a custom floor design without the need for professional installation.

6. Stylish Storage Solutions
Even a small powder bathroom needs storage, and there are plenty of creative ways to incorporate style and function. Install a small cabinet above the toilet to store extra towels or display decorative items like plants and candles. Baskets and trays can also be used to keep things organized and add texture to the room. Floating shelves are another great way to add storage without taking up too much space. 7. Install a New Faucet or Hardware
Small changes like replacing outdated faucets, cabinet knobs, and towel bars can make a big impact without breaking the bank. Opt for fixtures in finishes that complement your updated design—whether that’s matte black, polished brass, or sleek chrome. A modern faucet, in particular, can help elevate the entire space, giving it a more luxe, finished feel.

8. Add Greenery and Textiles
Adding a little greenery is a quick way to inject life into your powder bathroom. Choose plants that thrive in lower light, like snake plants, pothos, or a small succulent arrangement. Or if you don’t have a green thumb consider some faux options like the ones below! Pair them with stylish pots to make them stand out. For added warmth and texture, incorporate textiles like a plush hand towel, a patterned rug, or a fabric shower curtain. These soft touches make the room feel more inviting and complete.

9. Introduce Statement Lighting
Lighting plays a key role in setting the mood of a bathroom. If you still have a basic builder-grade light fixture, it might be time for an upgrade. Consider adding a statement light fixture like a chic chandelier, elegant sconces, or a modern pendant light. Look for fixtures that complement the other design elements of your bathroom, like the mirror and hardware. Lighting is not only functional but can also be a statement piece that adds personality to the room.

10. Don’t Forget about the Ceiling!
A lot of times people forget about the ceiling! It’s the perfect place to add a wood treatment, wallpaper, or a pop of color. I love the look of adding faux beams or tongue and groove board. I plan to paint our powder room ceiling the same color as the walls to add some vertical interest.
Refreshing your bathroom doesn’t have to involve a full renovation. Simple changes, like hanging wallpaper, painting, upgrading hardware, or introducing stylish storage, can all contribute to a more polished and inviting space!
